Rescue operations in the Southwest Pacific were carried out by both Army and Navy PBYs, specially equipped B-17s and USS Navy Submarinres. The PBYs generally had fighter cover for protection but not always and they paid a price for their bravery and dedication to rescuing downed crews. The combat crews held them in high regard. To them we owe a debt of gratitude and the 38th wishes to acknowledge the dependence we placed on these people. |
