| I was born in August 1946, the oldest son of M/Sgt John S. Diehl, 38th BG, 405th BS. Dad enlisted in Jan/41, arrived in Australia in Feb/42, departed New Guinea in Oct/44, and was discharged in Sep/45. For all his duty in Pacific, Dad was the Armorer for B-25 Filthy Lil in 405th. Crew Chief for Filthy Lil was Glen L. Martin during that time period. Both men came from small towns less than 100 miles apart in southwestern Pennsylvania and worked together for more than 2 years keeping Filthy Lil ready for the next mission. Dad was promoted to Chief Armorer of 405th in early 1944 when M/Sgt Herby Hayles (spelling?) was injured. Dad passed away Sep 2007 at age 89. |
